Hawaiian hometown fighter Hose upsets Baroni for ICON gold

Kala Kolohe Hose (top) put up the fight of his life Saturday against MMA veteran Phil Baroni (bottom). In front of a rabid home crowd, Hose earned the biggest victory of his career to date and captured the ICON Sport middleweight title.

The announcers said the ICON Sport main event Saturday between UFC and PRIDE veteran Phil Baroni and local fighter Kala Kolohe Hose was projected to last two minutes and indeed, Baroni was in control for the first two minutes of the fight. But those first two minutes would prove to be Baroni's only stretch of offense.
Hose overcame an early barrage of knees and soccer kicks to dominate Baroni for three more rounds, before putting him away at 26 seconds into the fifth round.
With the victory, Hose won the vacant ICON Sport middleweight title that he had been in pursuit of for nearly one year.
Former champion Robbie Lawler was stripped of the title for repeated injuries that forced him out of three scheduled title defenses against Hose.
No date or opponent has been announced for Hose's first title defense.
